Test
Basics
What
DNA testing, or paternity testing, can be performed on anyone to
determine genetic relationships. Gathering the samples to test takes
just a few moments, and your test results are completed in two weeks.
How
Samples are gathered using methods such as the buccal swab, in which
a swab is rubbed along the inside of the cheek to gather cells,
or by drawing a small amount of blood. These samples are then tested
and compared against each other using DNA probes to determine a
relationship.
Who
Paternity testing is commonly used to determine parentage of an
alleged father, which can be done with the child and father, and
with or without the mother. But it can also be used to determine
relationships such as siblings (brother or sister), grandparents,
or other relatives.
DNA testing can be utilized for family studies and reconstruction,
DNA profiling for wills and estate planning, and expert witness
court testimony.
